FHH Elevates Watchmaking Education at JCK Show

May 06

The Fondation Haute Horlogerie (FHH) is set to enrich the JCK and Luxury shows in Las Vegas with its specialized watchmaking education programs. These initiatives are designed to cater to a diverse audience, from novices eager to explore the world of timepieces to seasoned sales professionals seeking to master horological terminology, and enthusiasts keen on a hands-on experience with watch movements. By offering immersive workshops and informative sessions, FHH aims to cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation for the intricate craft of high-end mechanical watchmaking.

Established in 2005 by industry titans Audemars Piguet, Girard-Perregaux, and the Richemont group, the FHH operates as a non-profit organization based in Geneva. Its foundational mission was to serve as a definitive authority on all aspects related to high-end mechanical watchmaking. Pascal Ravessoud, Vice President of FHH, explains that the organization was created to clarify what "haute horlogerie" truly signifies. In an era where many claimed this distinction without clear criteria, FHH sought to define the values, history, and human artistry that underpin fine watchmaking. This focus on education stems from the belief that a well-informed customer is a more engaged and appreciative one, ultimately benefiting the entire industry.

For the first time, FHH is extending its academy to the Las Vegas jewelry week. A series of six hands-on watchmaking workshops will commence on Friday, May 29, at 10 a.m. in Bassano 2803 on Level 2 of The Venetian Expo. Each 90-minute session, priced at $290, offers participants the unique opportunity to disassemble and reassemble a watch movement. This practical experience is designed not to simplify the craft, but rather to highlight the complexity and precision involved, underscoring the exceptional skill of watchmakers and the inherent value of these sophisticated timepieces. Due to the intimate nature of these workshops, with each limited to eight participants, advance registration is essential.

Beyond the practical workshops, the FHH will also present engaging sessions on the historical and cultural significance of watches. Pascal Ravessoud will lead a discussion on "Tool Watches," exploring the evolution of robust timepieces initially developed for demanding activities such as aviation, deep-sea diving, and exploration. This session will delve into why these watches, though often no longer used for their original utilitarian purposes, remain highly coveted and popular today. Furthermore, Ravessoud will host a session titled "Iconic Watches" on Sunday, May 31, at 12:30 p.m. in Titian 2202. This presentation will chronicle legendary timepieces from the early 20th century to modern classics, including iconic models like the Cartier Santos and Tank, Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, Panerai, Patek Philippe Calatrava, and the highly sought-after Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus. The discussion will also touch upon watches with historical connections to space exploration, like the Omega Speedmaster, and those favored by significant historical figures, such as the Rolex GMT Master worn by revolutionaries. These narratives aim to illuminate the rich anecdotes and historical contexts that have cemented these watches' legendary status.

To further address the commercial aspects of the watch industry, Clio Godrèche, Senior Project Manager at FHH, will moderate two panel discussions on the Spotlight Stage on Level 2 of The Venetian Expo. On Friday, May 29, at 3 p.m., the panel will discuss "The New Watch Customer: Understanding How Gen Z is Reshaping the Watch Market," focusing on emerging consumer behaviors and preferences. A second panel, "The Future of Retail," on Sunday, May 31, at 3 p.m., will examine the evolving landscape of watch retail, particularly the increasing importance of personal relationships between customers and sales associates in the brick-and-mortar buying experience. The overarching goal of FHH's educational endeavors in Las Vegas is rooted in the conviction that while the United States represents a mature market for watches, there is still substantial room for growth. FHH aspires to be the definitive resource for watchmaking knowledge, serving both industry professionals and consumers, ultimately fostering a more knowledgeable and passionate community.
