Basilia Jewellery & Watch Fair: Basel's Bid to Reclaim its Status in the Global Industry

June 18

In the wake of Baselworld's dissolution seven years ago, an ambitious new initiative, the Basilia Jewellery & Watch Fair, is poised to re-establish Basel as a pivotal center for the global jewelry and watch sectors. This upcoming event, scheduled for April 2027, is a joint venture between the MCH Group, former organizers of Baselworld and operators of Art Basel, and Informa Markets Asia. Their objective is to harness the existing infrastructure of Messe Basel to fill the void created by Baselworld's absence, aiming to bring international business back to the city.

A primary goal of the Basilia fair is to cultivate a significant annual European gathering for the jewelry industry. While the watch industry has seen the continued evolution of events such as Watches and Wonders Geneva and Geneva Watch Days, the jewelry segment—encompassing manufacturers, wholesalers, gemstone dealers, retailers, and sourcing professionals—has lacked a comprehensive international forum since Baselworld's conclusion. Baselworld previously served as a crucial platform not only for networking but also for uniting a substantial portion of the jewelry industry, a role not entirely replicated by watch-focused exhibitions.

The Basilia Jewellery & Watch Fair's organizers anticipate that the event will also foster stronger commercial connections between Asia and Europe. It will offer Asian manufacturers and suppliers a dedicated platform to showcase their industrial capabilities, products, and services to the European market. This exhibition is intended to evolve into a vital marketplace for jewelry production, gemstone trade, distribution, and broader business expansion. Although the primary focus will be on jewelry, the fair will also welcome watchmakers, without directly competing with Watches and Wonders. Instead, it aims to cater to the entry-level and mid-range segments, thereby complementing the Geneva-based event. The inaugural edition is slated to run concurrently with Watches and Wonders, expecting to host between 400 and 500 exhibitors in April 2027. The city of Basel is actively endorsing this endeavor, recognizing the significant void left by Baselworld's departure.

The proposition for this event appears promising, leveraging Messe Basel's reputation as a leading European exhibition venue. The organizers are committed to offering competitive pricing to attract exhibitors back to the city. This collaborative project between MCH Group and Informa Markets will utilize Hall 2 of Messe Basel. While it remains to be seen whether this new fair can recapture even a fraction of Baselworld's historical influence, it undeniably represents a concerted effort to restore Basel's prominence as a premier global destination for the jewelry and watch industries. The revival of such a platform signifies a renewed commitment to fostering industry growth and international collaboration, creating an optimistic outlook for future advancements and partnerships within these specialized markets.
