World Diamond Council: Advocating for the Natural Diamond Trade

May 08

During the 2026 Annual General Meeting of the World Diamond Council (WDC) in Antwerp, incoming President Ronnie VanderLinden unequivocally stated the organization's main goal: to advocate for the natural diamond sector. He underscored the critical need for a cohesive and unified message across the industry, particularly in an environment characterized by heightened competition and disparate communication efforts. VanderLinden stressed that the WDC's effectiveness would be measured by its tangible contribution to the promotion and sale of natural diamonds, reaffirming its pivotal role in the industry's future.

VanderLinden's strategy is clear and direct: the diamond industry must present a consistent narrative regarding the essence and significance of natural diamonds. This message, he argued, must be substantiated by demonstrating the positive influence natural diamonds have in their countries of origin. The WDC, under his leadership, aims to eliminate impediments that hinder the trade's operations and competitiveness. He asserted that the compelling case for natural diamonds, rooted in their provenance, supply chain journey, and socio-economic contributions to producing regions, must be clearly articulated and showcased.

A central tenet of VanderLinden's agenda is the continued reinforcement of the Kimberley Process. He views this as an essential mechanism for bolstering trust and confidence in natural diamonds. He committed to advancing efforts to update the definition of conflict diamonds, ensuring it accurately reflects contemporary risks and further strengthens the integrity of natural diamonds. This initiative, previously championed by Feriel Zerouki, the outgoing president, whom VanderLinden lauded for her foundational work, remains a high priority to be brought to fruition.

VanderLinden also introduced Anoop Mehta as the newly appointed Vice President, commending him as a vital figure in both the Indian and global natural diamond industries. He expressed immense confidence in Mehta's experience, leadership, and extensive connections, deeming them crucial assets for their collaborative endeavors. Additionally, David Bonaparte was elected as the new Treasurer, and Udi Sheintal was re-elected as Secretary. In a special acknowledgment, Feriel Zerouki was designated Honorary WDC President, a gesture proposed by VanderLinden himself.

VanderLinden concluded by reiterating that the success of his presidency would not be judged by internal discussions or declarations, but by the concrete outcomes observed within the diamond trade. This emphasis on practical results highlights a commitment to driving tangible benefits for the natural diamond industry, ensuring its resilience and prosperity amidst evolving market dynamics.
