Sarah Leonard Fine Jewelers Closes After Nearly 80 Years in Westwood

September 04

After almost eight decades of serving the Westwood Village community, Sarah Leonard Fine Jewelers, a distinguished family-owned establishment, has announced its closure. The business, which first opened its doors in 1946 as Crescent Jewelers under the proprietorship of Sarah "Sunny" Friedman and Leonard "Lenny" Friedman, remained a family legacy until its recent cessation of operations.

Remarkably, the decision to close was not driven by financial difficulties. Linda Abell, daughter of the founders, revealed that the store was experiencing its most prosperous period yet, describing the pace as "so so busy for all these years — 80 years." Instead, the closure was prompted by the retirement of David Friedman and his wife, Gail, who represented the second generation running the business. This beloved jeweler had the unique distinction of assisting four generations of customers with their engagement ring selections.

The community's response has been one of deep appreciation and nostalgia. Michael Russell, Executive Director of the Westwood Village Improvement Association, highlighted the significance of a business closing on its own terms after more than seven decades, calling it a cause for celebration. Customers traveled from various locations, including Santa Cruz, San Diego, and even out of state, to convey their farewells and gratitude to the enduring establishment.

The narrative of Sarah Leonard Fine Jewelers serves as a poignant reminder of entrepreneurial spirit, familial dedication, and enduring community bonds. Their decades of service underscore the profound impact a local business can have, building trust and tradition across generations. The legacy they leave behind is not just one of commerce, but of human connection and unwavering commitment to quality and service.
