Diamond Market Sees Significant Price Recovery in August

September 04

The diamond market experienced a notable resurgence in August, with prices showing widespread recovery. Small diamond categories led this upward trend, and for the first time in over a year, the 1-carat diamond segment also registered positive growth. This encouraging shift follows a prolonged period of stagnant or declining prices, signaling a potential turning point for the industry.

According to Rapaport News, the Rapaport Trade Diamond Index (RAPI) for 1-carat diamonds (round, D-H, IF-VS2 on Rapaport Trade) saw a 0.5% increase in August. Smaller stones demonstrated even stronger performance, with 0.30-carat diamonds rising by 2% and 0.50-carat goods advancing by 2.5%. Conversely, the 3-carat diamond index experienced a slight dip of 0.4% during the same period. This recovery is largely attributed to strategic supply reductions by major mining companies and manufacturers, coupled with a general uptick in market activity after the traditional summer slowdown. Demand stabilization, particularly from the United States, also played a crucial role. Indian manufacturers, in anticipation of new U.S. tariffs, accelerated shipments to the American market, and the India International Jewellery Show in Mumbai reported brisk business. In contrast, activity in Antwerp and Israel remained seasonally subdued, while Chinese demand lagged ahead of the September Jewellery & Gem World Hong Kong fair.

Despite the broader market recovery, major diamond miners like Alrosa and De Beers continued to report decreased sales for the first half of the year, with Alrosa's revenue down 36% and De Beers' down 19%. However, De Beers managed to mitigate its losses through reduced expenses and more stable prices, indicating a cautious but hopeful outlook for the industry as it navigates evolving market dynamics and global trade patterns.

The current recovery in diamond prices reflects the resilience and adaptive capacity of the global jewelry sector. As market conditions continue to stabilize and demand gradually strengthens, it underscores the enduring value and allure of diamonds. This positive trajectory should inspire confidence and innovation within the industry, fostering a renewed sense of optimism for future growth and sustainable practices.
