Remembering Ellie Thompson: A Legacy of Jewelry Design and Community Engagement
This article pays tribute to Ellie Thompson, a distinguished Chicago-based gemologist and jewelry designer, who departed on July 30, 2026, at 60 years old. Her Roscoe Village boutique was celebrated for its enchanting atmosphere, earning a top recognition in INSTORE’s 2021 America’s Coolest Stores competition. Thompson's journey, from her initial apprenticeship and gemological studies to founding her own design company, was characterized by an unwavering passion for her craft, a visionary design philosophy that intertwined urban sophistication with the untamed beauty of nature, and a profound dedication to enriching her local community.
Thompson's professional trajectory into the intricate world of jewelry began with a hands-on apprenticeship under the esteemed British goldsmith Derek Simpson. This foundational experience was complemented by rigorous gemology studies at the Gemological Institute of America, where she achieved her Graduate Gemologist certification. Her early career saw her contribute to Gemworld International in Chicago, an experience that paved the way for her entrepreneurial venture, Chicago Gem Lab, established in 1991. Through this lab, she offered independent appraisal services, quickly building a prestigious clientele that included renowned auction houses such as Sotheby’s and Christie’s.
It was during this period that Thompson's creative spirit truly blossomed, leading her to pursue her latent design ambitions. Her inaugural collection, named City Rhythms, beautifully captured the architectural grandeur and vibrant pulse of Chicago, her adopted metropolis. In a pivotal move in 1998, she divested from Chicago Gem Lab to fully immerse herself in Ellie Thompson & Co., her dedicated design firm. This same year marked the beginning of significant industry recognition, including a third-place honor in a Platinum Guild International competition and multiple AGTA Spectrum Awards. Her innovative contributions continued to garner accolades, such as the American Vision Awards, honors from the World Gold Council, and the American Jewelry Design Council’s New Talent Competition in 2020. A testament to her enduring legacy, two of her masterpieces are now part of the permanent exhibition at the Field Museum’s Grainger Hall of Gems. Furthermore, in 2024, she chronicled her illustrious career in her memoir and design retrospective, Designing American Jewelry: From City Rhythms to Western Dreams. Her commitment to the industry was also evident in her role as a judge for the 2026 INSTORE Design Awards.
In 2019, Thompson established her business in a 1,200-square-foot storefront within Chicago’s Roscoe Village. This space, recognized by INSTORE as a Small Cool honoree in 2021, was celebrated for its blend of 'magic, whimsy, and adventure.' The shop's distinctive ambiance, featuring a hand-painted rotating window display, a serene shade garden, and silver jackalopes nestled among ferns, mirrored Thompson's localized marketing strategy. She deeply valued her personal connections, noting that many of her customers were long-standing acquaintances, local residents, or referrals. Judges like Jeff Prine lauded her for cultivating a brand and design perspective that permeated every aspect of her business, from displays to social media. Jennifer Shaheen admired how she harmoniously integrated urban and wilderness themes into her jewelry and its accompanying narratives.
The synergy between urban landscapes and natural wilderness was a recurring motif in Thompson's designs and life. As an ardent mountain biker, she drew profound inspiration from the American West, particularly Montana, where she sourced materials for custom carbon-steel elements in her store. This passion led her to create a line of hand-carved sterling silver belt buckles, establishing her as one of the few female designers in this niche across North America. Thompson often articulated her design philosophy through the lens of relationships, emphasizing the comfort and support she offered clients throughout the design journey, culminating in jewelry that was not merely beautiful but profoundly meaningful. Beyond her flourishing business, Thompson was an active and influential member of her neighborhood's business community. She contributed to the Lakeview/Roscoe Village Chamber of Commerce and spearheaded its Ambassadors Committee, playing a vital role in welcoming new businesses to the area.
Ellie Thompson's enduring spirit is cherished by her daughter, Lindsay Thompson; her mother, Drusilla D. Cherry; her father, Dr. Ralph F. Stroup, and stepmother, Mary Ann; her brothers, Derek, Justin, and Dylan; four nieces; and her loyal dog, Beefcake. She is also lovingly remembered by a vast network of friends from the mountain biking community and beyond. A commemoration of her life is scheduled for August 23 in Chicago, with a memorial sale of her jewelry and art slated for September. Details regarding the sale will be shared via @elliethompsonco on Instagram. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be directed to SKORR (Southern Kettles Off Road Riders). Ellie Thompson's legacy is one of artistic brilliance, community stewardship, and a life lived with adventurous spirit.
