Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch: A Five-Year Retrospective

March 03

Since its reintroduction on January 8th, 2021, the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, specifically reference 310.30.42.50.01.001, has undergone notable enhancements that have captivated enthusiasts and casual buyers alike. While long-standing admirers of the Speedmaster series have largely welcomed these improvements, new buyers were initially taken aback by the substantial price adjustment, moving from under €5,000 to €6,100.

These comprehensive changes spanned the watch's case, dial, hands, and bezel, culminating in a much-anticipated redesign of the bracelet. Despite these modifications, the iconic design language of the Speedmaster remained faithfully preserved. The choice between the Hesalite crystal model and its sapphire counterpart, which features an applied logo dial, a bracelet with polished accents, and a transparent case back showcasing the advanced Master Chronometer-certified 3861 movement, presented a significant decision for potential owners. The author personally favored the Hesalite version due to its close ties to the original Speedmaster Professional and already owning another Omega with the 3861 movement, though acknowledged the sapphire version’s growing popularity, marking a shift in consumer preference.

After five years, the watch's performance remains commendable, although it hasn't been worn daily. Its versatile nature allows it to complement almost any attire or event. The Hesalite crystal, though exhibiting minor scuffs, does not yet necessitate polishing, indicating a graceful aging process. Its chronometric accuracy is impressive; tests revealed a daily deviation of +4 seconds in a dial-up position and +2 seconds with the crown down, well within the Master Chronometer standards of 0 to +5 seconds per day. The amplitude, ranging from 335 to 340 degrees, further confirms the movement’s robust health. Minor aesthetic changes, such as the dial printing and the chronograph seconds hand’s drop counterweight, have proven to be non-issues over time, and the updated dial offers greater visual depth. The enhanced stainless steel bracelet, introduced with a more elegant 20-15mm taper and engraved lines, represents a significant comfort and design improvement over earlier versions, despite initial models lacking a micro-adjustment clasp. Furthermore, the Master Chronometer certification now guarantees a 50-meter water resistance, offering greater peace of mind for wearers, although caution is still advised against operating pushers underwater.

The evolution of the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, from its initial redesign to its current standing, exemplifies a commitment to heritage while embracing modern watchmaking advancements. Its enduring appeal, despite price increases, speaks volumes about its quality, precision, and iconic status. It serves as a testament to how meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful enhancements can solidify a timepiece's position as a cherished possession, offering both reliability and timeless elegance to its wearers.
