Kiwame Tokyo, an emerging independent Japanese watchmaker, distinguishes itself in a market primarily dominated by prominent brands such as Seiko and Citizen. Situated in Asakusa, Tokyo's historic heart, the company, under the leadership of Masami Watanabe, crafts elegant dress watches with a Calatrava-inspired design at competitive price points. The newly launched Yane series, named for the Japanese word for 'roof' and influenced by Asakusa's ancient temples, features a distinctive rectangular case.
This innovative collection follows previous successful releases from Kiwame Tokyo, including the 1940s-inspired 38mm Kurotsuki and Usuki models, the robust Iwao field watch, the Mune series that subtly incorporates elements from traditional Japanese rooftops, and the 37mm Kubo collection known for its recessed small seconds sub-dial. The Yane models mark a notable shift from the brand's earlier mid-century round cases, embracing a rectangular form that exudes a strong Art Deco sensibility.
The rectangular Tank watch, designed by Louis Cartier in 1917, pioneered the sleek geometric lines that became synonymous with the Art Deco movement. Drawing from this historical precedent, the new Yane timepiece boasts a 44mm long stainless steel case, measuring 26.5mm in width and 9.7mm in height. Its design thoughtfully integrates elements inspired by traditional Japanese temple architecture. Asakusa, a celebrated historic district in Tokyo, retains the ambiance of 'shitamachi' (old-town Tokyo) and revolves around the iconic 7th-century Senso-ji Buddhist temple, known for its dramatic, sweeping rooftops. From a side view, the watch's polished case beautifully mimics the silhouette of a temple. The upper and lower sections of the case are adorned with concave indentations, meticulously etched with a series of horizontal grooves that evoke the rhythmic pattern of traditional Japanese temple roof tiles.
These timepieces are offered with either brown or black lacquered dials, designed with a deliberate absence of hour markers to achieve a refined, minimalist aesthetic. The sole index, positioned at noon, mirrors the shape of a 'mune,' the highest ridge of a temple roof. The reverse side of the case also showcases a pattern inspired by the 'taruki,' or visible roof rafters typically found beneath traditional temple eaves. The watch is powered by a compact Japanese Miyota automatic movement. The Calibre 6T27, a three-hand movement tailored for smaller watches, measures 19.8mm x 5.23mm, features 21 jewels, and operates at a high-beat frequency of 4Hz, providing a 40-hour power reserve and indicating only hours and minutes.
The brown lacquered variant is presented with a brown Italian calfskin strap, tapering from 20mm to 16mm, while the black dial version is paired with a black leather strap, both equipped with quick-release spring bars. Pre-orders for the initial release of 400 pieces, evenly split between the two dial colors, are scheduled to commence on August 19, 2026, at 11:00 AM (JST), with deliveries anticipated by the end of December. Subsequent sales will recommence in January 2027. The retail price for these exquisite watches is USD 730, excluding tax.
