Horological Society of New York Expands Global Financial Aid for Watchmaking Students in 2026

January 16

The Horological Society of New York (HSNY) has substantially expanded its financial assistance programs for watchmaking students and professionals for the year 2026. Thanks to the generous backing of the Vogt Foundation, the scholarship budget has seen a threefold increase, allowing these vital opportunities to be extended internationally for the first time. This extensive portfolio now encompasses ten distinct scholarships and awards, prominently featuring the newly launched Independent Watchmaker Grant, designed to empower active independent watchmakers in honing their skills and growing their enterprises.

The HSNY Independent Watchmaker Grant serves as a crucial resource for burgeoning independent watchmakers, offering financial support for essential tools and initial operational expenses. This initiative aims to foster creativity and superior craftsmanship within the horological field. Selection for the grant is based on various criteria, including the originality of the watch concept, the meticulousness of its finishing, and the overall excellence of its design. A particular focus is placed on projects that delve into intricate complications and innovative mechanical movements. Through this program, HSNY reinforces its commitment to nurturing technical proficiency, artistic expression, and independent innovation within the global watchmaking community. Individual watchmakers engaged in crafting unique timepieces are encouraged to apply for the HSNY Independent Watchmaker Grant, with awards reaching up to $50,000 available to successful applicants.

Beyond the new Independent Watchmaker Grant, HSNY is offering a total of nine scholarships to benefit watchmaking students and educational institutions across the globe. Veterans, students, and current watchmakers interested in these financial aid opportunities can access comprehensive details on the HSNY website. Last year, HSNY disbursed a remarkable $160,000 in scholarship funds, benefiting 28 students and four watchmaking schools. The application window is open from January 1 to March 1, with financial aid recipients announced in March. The scholarships available include:

  • Independent Watchmaker Grant (New for 2026)
  • The Henry B. Fried Scholarship for Watchmaking Students
  • The Andre Bibeau Scholarship for Veteran Watchmaking Students
  • The Benjamin Banneker Scholarship for Black Watchmaking Students

  • The Charles Sauter Scholarship for Innovation in Horology
  • The Grace Fryer Scholarship for Female Watchmaking Students
  • The Howard Robbins Award for Watchmaking Schools
  • The Oscar Waldan Scholarship for Jewish Watchmaking Students

The Horological Society of New York's augmented financial aid and global reach in 2026 mark a significant step forward in supporting the future of watchmaking. By broadening access to these crucial resources, HSNY continues to champion the development of technical expertise and artistic innovation, ensuring that the legacy of fine horology endures and thrives for generations to come.
