The Ardea: A Fusion of Craftsmanship and Innovation

Bradley Taylor, an acclaimed independent watchmaker hailing from North Vancouver, Canada, proudly presents his latest creation, the Ardea. This timepiece is a significant milestone, representing his third watch and the first to incorporate an in-house developed complication. Having honed his skills in Le Locle under the tutelage of Henrik Korpela and holding a Patek Philippe Level II service certification from Geneva, Taylor embarked on the Ardea project in late 2023, following the successful sell-out of his previous two series.

The Ardea is available in two distinct metal options: robust stainless steel and luxurious platinum 950. Both versions feature a diameter of 37.8mm, a lug-to-lug measurement of 46.4mm, and a slender thickness of 10.9mm, inclusive of the crystals. Designed for optimal comfort, the sapphire caseback is subtly domed, and the watch maintains a water resistance rating of 5 ATM. The dial, crafted from 925 sterling silver, is a masterpiece of engine-turning, meticulously patterned on a 120-year-old rose engine that Taylor personally restored over three months. This process creates a distinctive 36-scallop rosette with a progressive phase shift, resulting in a captivating swirling texture. Following the engraving, the dial undergoes depletion gilding, a traditional silversmithing technique involving repeated heating and acid treatments to achieve a pure silver surface, which is then protected with Zapon lacquer. The precise text and markings are pad-printed using a Tampoprint machine, also restored by Taylor. The applied numerals, machined from solid platinum, are hand-polished to a spherical shape, and the dial's lettering, including the wordmark, was expertly designed by Toronto typographer Ian Brignell. The dial assembly itself is composed of 17 individual parts, including functional fixing screws, underscoring the watch's intricate construction.

Precision Engineering: The Caliber 475RS and Retrograde Seconds

At the heart of the Ardea lies the caliber 475RS, a hand-wound movement measuring 4.75mm in thickness and 31mm in diameter. Operating at a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour, it offers a power reserve of 40 hours. The foundational architecture of the 475RS incorporates selected components from the renowned Omega 30T2 family, providing a reliable and historically significant base. However, the majority of the movement, approximately 80% of its components, were meticulously designed and crafted by Taylor himself.

A standout feature of the 475RS is its freesprung balance wheel, precisely machined in-house from Grade 5 titanium and fitted with platinum eccentric timing weights, complemented by a Breguet overcoil hairspring. The gear train wheels, made from solid 14K gold, each demand an entire day of dedicated hand-finishing, a testament to the uncompromising attention to detail. In a nod to his Canadian heritage, the caseback and ratchet wheel screws feature unique square-headed profiles, achieved through electrical discharge machining (EDM), a process capable of creating such intricate shapes at a minute scale. The caliber offers hours, minutes, and a distinctive retrograde seconds display positioned at six o'clock. This retrograde mechanism, an integrated part of the 475RS's design rather than a modular addition, offers a dynamic and swift sweep, easily distinguishable from a power reserve or retrograde date. Taylor rigorously tested this mechanism for a full year prior to its release, documenting 1,440 reset cycles daily to confirm minimal wear on contact surfaces over the long term, ensuring its durability and reliability. The watch's name, Ardea, derives from the Latin word for heron, inspired by the birds that hunt along the Seymour River outside Taylor's workshop, known for their swift and precise movements in catching prey.
