Awake Dare & Dream: A Whimsical Fusion of Art and Timekeeping

February 18

The Awake Dare & Dream watch, a limited edition of 50 pieces from 2024, represents a distinctive blend of artistic expression and horological craftsmanship. This particular model, which features a 40mm grade 2 titanium case, marks the culmination of Awake's use of this specific case design. It embodies a growing trend within the luxury watch industry to incorporate elements of pop culture and whimsical art, moving beyond traditionally 'serious' aesthetics. The timepiece serves as a testament to the brand's creative vision, which has been significantly influenced by the integration of imaginative themes into watch dials, a shift that gained momentum in the luxury sector around 2015.

A notable aspect of the Dare & Dream is its dial, adorned with a captivating cartoon-style design conceptualized by artist Nicolas Barrome Forgues. Forgues, who previously collaborated with Awake, was given extensive creative liberty to craft a playful narrative. He introduced the 'Bifrons,' a species of carefree, party-loving aliens, depicted as interacting mischievously with Earthly objects, including a playful deconstruction of the Awake logo and hour markers. This artistic approach results in a dial that is both engaging and distinct, reminiscent of a fusion between contemporary whimsical art and 1970s psychedelic animation, with a hint of Terry Gilliam's influence. Despite the intricate artwork, the watch maintains clear legibility through its applied and luminescent hour markers and hands, with the artwork itself also glowing in the dark. This monochromatic gray and white timepiece is offered with both a textured white rubber strap and a black textile strap.

Technical specifications of the Dare & Dream include a case thickness of 11.3mm and a lug-to-lug distance of 47.5mm. It boasts a water resistance of 100 meters, secured by a screw-down crown. The dial is protected by an AR-coated sapphire crystal, with another sapphire crystal on the case back revealing the movement, which is further enhanced with artistic embellishments. Powering this watch is a Japanese Miyota caliber 9039 automatic movement, operating at 4Hz and offering approximately two days of power reserve. It's worth noting that subsequent Awake models have adopted the Swiss La Joux-Perret G101 automatic movement. While both movements are from Citizen-owned entities and share architectural similarities, the G101 is Swiss-made, features more elaborate decoration, and provides an extended power reserve.

The philosophy behind watches like the Dare & Dream transcends mere timekeeping functionality. They are designed to evoke strong emotions and foster a sense of joy and imagination. Awake, in collaboration with Nicolas Barrome Forgues, aims to tap into the inner child within each wearer, encouraging a carefree and creative outlook on life, much like the depicted Bifrons. The message conveyed is not just about fun and creativity but profoundly about the power of imagination. These timepieces offer a miniature window into an imaginative world, allowing individuals to carry a piece of this whimsical art and the emotions it inspires with them daily. This innovative approach to watch design, prioritizing emotional connection and imaginative wonder, is a refreshing departure from conventional luxury watch aesthetics. The Awake Dare & Dream, originally priced at 890 Euros, was a limited release that champions a contemporary and imaginative direction for watch enthusiasts.
