Zenith Unveils Chronomaster Sport Skeleton Chronograph: A Deep Dive into Open-Worked Elegance

April 13

Zenith, a brand celebrated for its mastery of skeletonization, has expanded its popular chronograph collection with a new series of open-worked timepieces. Presented at Watches & Wonders 2026, the Zenith Chronomaster Sport Skeleton Chronograph line offers four distinct variations, including models in resilient steel, luxurious rose gold, and an exclusive gem-embellished version, demonstrating the brand's commitment to both innovative design and exquisite craftsmanship. Our initial assessment focused on three of these new releases, exploring whether the transparent dial treatment truly enhances their appeal.

The collection's steel offerings include two versions: one featuring a sophisticated black ceramic bezel complemented by the classic El Primero tri-color sub-dials in grey, anthracite, and blue, and another sporting a vibrant green ceramic bezel with more muted grey-toned sub-dials. Both steel variants come with a versatile three-link bracelet and an additional rubber strap for enhanced comfort. Additionally, a rose gold model with a black ceramic bezel is available, paired elegantly with a black rubber strap. A highly exclusive, gem-set rose gold variant, limited to just 10 pieces, was also unveiled, though not available for a direct hands-on experience. Despite the visual modifications, the new Chronomaster Sport Skeleton models retain the familiar wearing comfort and balanced weight of their predecessors, ensuring a consistent ergonomic experience with a 41mm diameter and 13.8mm thickness.

The most striking alteration lies in the dial, which now features a sapphire construction that transitions from a dark tint at the edges to a clear center, offering an unobstructed view of the intricate El Primero 3600 movement. This design choice, while visually captivating for aficionados of open-worked mechanisms, does impact readability. The hands and applied markers, though treated with Super-LumiNova, can sometimes merge with the complex background of the movement, particularly in the grey-toned steel models. The rose gold version, with its warmer accents, offers a slight improvement in contrast. This design philosophy underscores a preference for aesthetic impact over ultimate clarity, a trade-off that will resonate differently with individual wearers. Regardless of legibility concerns, the self-winding El Primero 3600 SK remains a marvel of engineering, beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour and enabling precise 1/10th of a second chronograph measurements, a hallmark of Zenith's chronographs. The movement's clean, well-executed skeletonization, highlighted by an open-worked rotor and a vibrant blue column wheel, truly impresses.

Ultimately, the Chronomaster Sport Skeleton Chronograph appeals to those who appreciate a blend of traditional watchmaking and modern aesthetic transparency. It delivers the same high-performance functionality and comfortable fit as the conventional Chronomaster Sport models, shifting the focus towards a celebration of mechanical artistry. This iteration serves as a testament to Zenith's dedication to pushing design boundaries while honoring its technical heritage, inviting watch enthusiasts to admire the intricate dance of gears and springs within. Zenith's continued pursuit of excellence and innovation in watchmaking inspires appreciation for the blend of art and precision.
