Vacheron Constantin's Artistic Homage to Wildlife in Horology

August 28

Vacheron Constantin, a renowned name in artistic watchmaking, consistently employs traditional crafts such as engraving, enameling, and guilloché to transform watch dials into exquisite canvases. Their latest collection, part of the 'One of Not Many Crafts Programme,' is a collaboration between six artists and six disciplines, aiming to infuse the world of haute horlogerie with animal-inspired designs.

The challenge of working within a 42mm wristwatch, with limited space between the dial and the sapphire crystal, necessitated the miniaturization and re-evaluation of each technique. This led to the development of novel tools and processes to adapt these intricate crafts to such a confined scale. The 'Animal Kingdom' series comprises six distinct watches, each offering a unique interpretation. 'Feathersnake' employs miniature featherwork to craft a three-dimensional serpent, while 'Glassoctopus' showcases a meticulously hand-sculpted glass octopus. 'Oraygami' translates the Japanese art of paper folding into six miniature manta rays, and 'Tigerbroidery' combines gold embroidery with silk to depict its animal tableau. Additionally, 'Papercroc' presents a white-on-white crocodile created through embossed and cut paper, and 'Woodenwings' utilizes miniature marquetry with diverse wood species to form its decorative motif. These six watches, united by a common theme, exemplify a remarkable convergence of varied materials and artisanal methods.

All timepieces within the collection share an identical case and movement. The 42mm case, measuring 12.9mm in thickness, is available in either 18k white gold or 18k 5N pink gold, depending on the specific model. The series is animated by the in-house Calibre 2460 G4, a movement frequently utilized in the Maison’s Métiers d’Art creations. This automatic movement presents hours, minutes, day, and date through four apertures situated along the dial’s periphery, thus preserving the central area for the artistic composition while keeping timekeeping information at the edges. A sapphire caseback reveals the calibre, which features a 22k gold oscillating weight specially designed for the collection and hand-engraved with patterns inspired by the tools of the six artisans. Each watch is complemented by a calfskin strap, adorned with embossed decoration that mirrors elements of its corresponding dial. This collection stands as a testament to the enduring beauty and complexity of traditional crafts reimagined for contemporary haute horlogerie.
