Since its inaugural release in 1963 by Jack Heuer, the Carrera Chronograph has held a distinguished place in watchmaking history. Commemorating its 60th year, TAG Heuer revisits the classic design, drawing inspiration from the original curved acrylic crystals of the 1960s and 1970s. This retro appeal is now enhanced with a contemporary twist: a robust domed sapphire crystal, known as the Carrera Glassbox. This innovative crystal seamlessly integrates with the case, offering a nostalgic aesthetic without the susceptibility to scratches associated with older hesalite materials. This modern iteration of the Carrera Glassbox now serves as the canvas for a fresh collaboration with FRGMT, the influential design studio founded by Japanese streetwear icon, Hiroshi Fujiwara.

Fujiwara's Creative Touch: A History of Collaboration

Hiroshi Fujiwara's partnership with TAG Heuer has previously yielded remarkable timepieces. Their initial collaboration produced a subtly refined, minimalist version of the 39mm vintage-inspired Carrera, which garnered significant acclaim. Following this success, a 2020 project featured the Calibre Heuer 02, applied to a larger watch inspired by the 1970s Autavia models. These prior ventures established a precedent for Fujiwara's ability to infuse contemporary design sensibilities into TAG Heuer's classic watch lines.

The Carrera Glassbox: A Masterpiece of Minimalist Design

This third collaborative effort with FRGMT pushes the Carrera Glassbox's design towards an unprecedented level of sleek simplicity. Despite this minimalist approach, Fujiwara masterfully captures the very essence of the Carrera. The case maintains the signature Carrera silhouette, boasting water resistance up to 100 meters, vintage-style pump pushers, sharp angular lugs, and a balanced thickness of 13.9mm. The surfaces are meticulously finished with a combination of brushed and polished textures. Consistent with other Glassbox models, the absence of a traditional bezel allows the dramatically domed sapphire crystal to extend gracefully over the curved tachymeter flange, reaching the very edge of the case. When observed from various angles, the 'glassbox' effect creates fascinating visual distortions, further accentuating Fujiwara's refined dial design.

Subtle Refinements and Distinctive Dial Elements

The updated design features a crisp white, elevated, and rounded flange for the tachymeter scale, adorned with understated silver numerals, positioned prominently above the matte black opaline dial. The sub-dials retain their traditional arrangement: running seconds at 6 o'clock, a 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock, and a 12-hour counter at 9 o'clock. However, in a bold display of Fujiwara's minimalist philosophy, these recessed black counters are devoid of numerals, relying instead on simple baton markers for readability. The precise second/minute track remains on the sloping flange surrounding the dial. Instead of applied hour markers, small rectangular plots of grey Super-LumiNova define the hours, complemented by rhodium-plated hour and minute hands with white Super-LumiNova inserts. At the 12 o'clock position, a framed and beveled date window features FRGMT's distinctive lightning bolt logo in white against a black backdrop, appearing at 1 and 11, with "FRAGMENT" subtly inscribed on the dial at 6 o'clock.

Precision Engineering and Exclusive Touches

Turning the watch over reveals another signature detail: the designer's lightning bolt logo, subtly printed in black on the sapphire crystal, centered above the openworked, shield-shaped rotor. This rotor is further enhanced with refined black lines by Fujiwara. The timepiece is powered by the in-house Calibre TH20-00, an automatic column-wheel chronograph with a vertical clutch. This robust movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and boasts an impressive power reserve of 80 hours.

Completing the Ensemble: Bracelet and Availability

The watch is paired with a sophisticated seven-row 'beads-of-rice' bracelet, a design element reintroduced earlier this year with the Carrera Glassbox collection. Fujiwara's influence is evident in the central link, which receives a distinctive black PVD coating. This Carrera Chronograph x Fragment edition is presented in an elegant black box and is a limited release of 500 individually numbered pieces, available for purchase at CHF 8,150.
