A Reflective Look at 2025 in the Watchmaking Industry
The past year was profoundly significant for me, marking my fifth anniversary at Hodinkee and my first full year dedicated to writing about timepieces. It was a period filled with numerous observations and reflections on the evolving landscape of the watch industry.
Looking broadly at the sector, 2025 appeared to herald a resurgence of maximalist tendencies. This year, more than any in recent memory, was characterized by truly astonishing releases. While the concept of the 'Holy Trinity' might not hold as much sway as it once did, the concurrent unveiling of the world's most intricate wristwatch and a monumental automaton clock by Vacheron Constantin, alongside Audemars Piguet's ultra-thin flyback chronograph with flying tourbillon, served as powerful reminders of the enduring excellence at the pinnacle of watchmaking. These extraordinary creations, though often beyond the reach of most individuals, underscore a commitment to pushing the boundaries of horological artistry and defining what it means to be a luxury brand today.
Despite these remarkable achievements, the industry also grappled with an overwhelming influx of new products. This saturation, potentially a delayed effect from past global events, led to a cluttered market where brands struggled to articulate their narratives effectively and capture the attention of increasingly discerning consumers. Coupled with a persistent upward trend in prices, the watch world in 2025 appeared to be wrestling with challenges largely self-imposed, stemming from recent cycles of hype and a certain degree of uniformity. However, amid this complexity, numerous exceptional timepieces emerged across all price segments, highlighting the industry's continuous innovation. Moving forward, a renewed focus from brands and watchmakers will be crucial for a more streamlined and impactful future.
My journey in 2025 involved extensive travel and visits to various manufacturers, from the exquisite ateliers of Geneva to the innovative facilities of Swatch Sistem51. This exposure highlighted the vast spectrum of watchmaking, from meticulous handcrafted artistry to ingenious mass production, and reinforced my belief that all forms of horology contribute uniquely to the industry's vibrancy. Embracing this diversity and fostering a community that appreciates every facet of watchmaking, irrespective of perceived status, is essential. The ongoing dialogue against watch snobbery, advocating for an inclusive appreciation of all watches, will undoubtedly continue to shape the industry's positive trajectory.
