A Rare Glimpse into Diamond Formation: Inclusions Unveiled
A recent examination of a collection of African diamonds has brought to light a remarkable specimen: a 2.34-carat transparent, near-colorless diamond octahedron from South Africa. This captivating crystal, measuring 7.71 × 7.39 × 4.92 mm, exhibits partial etching and a distinct strong blue fluorescence under long-wave ultraviolet light. What truly sets this diamond apart are the diverse mineral inclusions nestled within its structure, providing invaluable clues about its deep Earth origins. The presence of these varied internal minerals, particularly a prominent almandine-pyrope garnet, offers a unique window into the geological conditions and processes under which this exquisite gem formed, enriching our understanding of diamond genesis.
At the heart of this particular diamond, a striking transparent yellow-orange inclusion was identified through laser Raman microspectroscopy as an almandine-pyrope garnet. The distinctive yellow-orange hue is characteristic of this specific garnet type. Beyond this central feature, the diamond also encompasses translucent light grayish-green omphacite crystals, which display birefringence, alongside opaque black sulfide and graphite crystals. Some of these opaque inclusions are notably arranged in rosette formations, adding to the intricate internal landscape of the diamond.
Almandine-pyrope crystals, when found as inclusions within diamonds, typically present as medium to deep yellow-orange with a vitreous luster. These inclusions often adopt somewhat rounded forms, indicating their protogenetic nature — meaning they predated or formed concurrently with the host diamond. From a geological perspective, the discovery of an almandine-pyrope garnet inclusion serves as a critical indicator that the diamond originated in a rock type known as eclogite. This finding is significant because eclogites are high-pressure, high-temperature metamorphic rocks found deep within the Earth's mantle, reinforcing the extreme conditions necessary for diamond formation.
This detailed analysis of the diamond's internal composition not only highlights the unique characteristics of individual gemstones but also contributes to the broader scientific understanding of Earth's geodynamics. The specific suite of inclusions observed in this South African diamond, especially the almandine-pyrope garnet, offers compelling evidence that such diamonds crystallize within eclogitic environments. This research underscores the vital role that mineral inclusions play as microscopic time capsules, preserving the geological history and formation conditions of their diamond hosts, and ultimately enriching our comprehension of these remarkable natural wonders.
