A standout piece at the auction was 'The Vanderbilt Sapphire,' a stunning Belle Epoque brooch from the Gilded Age. This magnificent jewel far exceeded expectations, realizing USD $3.6 million against an initial estimate of USD $1.0-1.5 million. Its exceptional performance highlighted the strong appeal of rare and historically significant gemstones.
Vanderbilt Family Jewels Achieve 100% Sell-Through
The entire collection of Vanderbilt Family Jewels was successfully sold, achieving a remarkable CHF 3,425,411 (approximately US$4,252,990). This total was more than four times the collection's low estimate, signaling intense buyer interest and a deep appreciation for the legacy and provenance of these pieces.
Strong Demand for Signed and Period Jewels
The auction demonstrated a clear global demand for signed jewels and exceptional period pieces. With 90% of signed lots finding new owners and many significantly surpassing their pre-sale high estimates, the results confirm the strong market for unique, high-quality jewelry from distinguished makers. Benoît Repellin, Phillips' Worldwide Head of Jewellery, emphasized the lasting allure of historical jewels and the refined taste of international collectors. He noted that bringing the Vanderbilt family's treasures to the global stage was a profound honor, and the enthusiastic response validated the enduring power of extraordinary jewelry. The auction also saw strong bidding for iconic designs from leading houses, including Cartier's 'Panthère' jewels and Bulgari's 'Serpenti' belt, all of which fetched prices well above their highest estimates. Following this successful live event, Phillips looks forward to its Geneva Jewels Online Auction, continuing until November 13, and an upcoming live sale in New York on December 8.
