Marc Newson and Ressence Collaborate on the Type 3 MN Watch

December 04

In a fascinating collaboration that marries contemporary design with innovative horology, acclaimed industrial designer Marc Newson has teamed up with Ressence to unveil the Type 3 MN. This limited-edition timepiece is a testament to both Newson's distinctive aesthetic vision, drawing inspiration from his early Ikepod creations, and Ressence's groundbreaking oil-filled display technology.

Ressence Type 3 MN: A Fusion of Design and Innovation

Marc Newson, a figure celebrated across various design disciplines, including his significant contributions to the horological world with Ikepod and Apple Watch, has once again left his indelible mark on timekeeping. His latest endeavor, the Ressence Type 3 MN, represents a compelling synthesis of his design philosophy and Ressence's avant-garde approach to watchmaking.

The Type 3 MN, a series limited to 80 pieces, instantly resonates with Newson's signature style. It features a lugless, rounded titanium case, 45mm in diameter and 15mm thick, which seamlessly integrates with a smooth rubber strap. This design choice notably harks back to the 47mm Megapode Chronograph from Ikepod, particularly its gray and black variant from 1999, echoing its busy dial composition and vibrant yellow accents.

What truly sets the Type 3 MN apart is its unique display, a hallmark of Ressence's Type 3 collection. The dial, crafted from Grade 5 titanium with DLC and PVD coatings, appears to float just beneath the domed sapphire crystal. This illusion is achieved through a silicone-oil-filled chamber, which eliminates light refraction and effectively projects the dial's elements onto the crystal's surface. This creates a mesmerizing, almost surreal visual experience, akin to the laminated OLED displays found in modern smartwatches.

The intricate time-telling mechanism is the brainchild of Ressence founder Benoît Mintiens. It comprises various indications—hours, day of the week, a running indicator (not a traditional seconds hand, completing a rotation every 180 seconds), and an oil temperature gauge—all displayed on smaller black satellite discs. The main minutes hand is set within a larger grey ring, and as minutes pass, the entire main disc rotates, with the satellite discs maintaining their vertical orientation, ensuring a dynamic and ever-changing dial appearance.

The ingenious engineering extends to the watch's internal workings. While powered by an extensively modified ETA 2824-2 base caliber, the movement is isolated in an air-filled chamber, separated from the oil-filled dial by a thin titanium membrane. Tiny magnets transmit power to the display, and a bellows system cleverly compensates for oil volume fluctuations caused by temperature changes, reflected by the oil temperature gauge on the dial. This sophisticated blend of mechanics and liquid is a testament to modern horological innovation.

Despite its visual complexity and advanced mechanics, the Type 3 MN maintains a playful character. The black and yellow accents, reminiscent of crash-test dummies, inject a sense of fun. Its lugless design and rounded profile ensure a comfortable fit, even on smaller wrists, making it a joy to wear and behold from every angle. The curved sapphire crystal further enhances the viewing experience, allowing the outer dial text to be seen even from the side.

Priced at $59,800, the Ressence Type 3 MN is positioned as a collector's item for those who appreciate avant-garde design and mechanical ingenuity. While the price point places it in the realm of high-end traditional watches, its distinctiveness and limited production run are likely to appeal to a specific niche of design-conscious enthusiasts, offering a truly unique statement piece in the world of luxury timepieces.

This collaboration between Marc Newson and Ressence stands as a remarkable example of how creative vision and technical mastery can converge to redefine watchmaking. It's a timepiece that not only tells time but also tells a story of innovation, artistic collaboration, and a deep appreciation for the unconventional.
