Louis Vuitton and De Bethune Introduce the Revolutionary LVDB-03 Louis Varius

February 05

In a pioneering move within high watchmaking, Louis Vuitton and De Bethune have introduced the LVDB-03 Louis Varius, a collaboration that reimagines the relationship between a wristwatch and a master clock. This innovative project integrates a contemporary GMT travel watch with a large mechanical clock, designed to automatically wind and synchronize the timepiece. This intricate system draws inspiration from the 18th-century Sympathique clock concept, offering a unique blend of historical horological artistry and modern functionality, aimed at providing an unparalleled experience for luxury connoisseurs.

The LVDB-03 project marks a significant departure from traditional watchmaking collaborations by creating a holistic timekeeping system. Unlike typical partnerships that focus solely on the wristwatch, this endeavor emphasizes the synergistic interaction between the watch and its accompanying clock. The underlying philosophy positions timekeeping as an integrated experience, connecting the user, the wristwatch, and the master clock through a complex yet intuitive mechanical interface, rather than relying on electronic components. This innovative approach sets the LVDB-03 apart in the realm of modern horology.

To truly appreciate the ingenuity behind the LVDB-03, one must consider the legacy of the Sympathique clock, originally conceived by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1795. Breguet's vision was to create a master clock capable of automatically winding and setting a smaller, portable watch when it was placed within its mechanism. This concept was revolutionary for its era, addressing the need for precise timekeeping at a time when pocket watches required frequent manual adjustments. Breguet's original Sympathique clocks were exceedingly rare, highlighting the complexity and ambition of such an undertaking.

The core of this collaborative project is the LVDB-03 GMT Louis Varius wristwatch itself. While technically sophisticated, its primary function is to cater to the needs of the modern traveler, a fitting theme for Louis Vuitton. This particular timepiece is heavily influenced by De Bethune's GMT Starry Varius DB25VGR, utilizing the DB2507 movement, but reimagined with Louis Vuitton's distinctive design aesthetic. The watch features a substantial 45mm case, predominantly crafted from titanium and shaped in Louis Vuitton’s iconic Tambour Taiko silhouette. De Bethune's thermal oxidation process imparts a striking deep blue hue to the case, complemented by platinum lugs that provide both visual contrast and a sense of refined weight. The interior surfaces of the polished platinum lugs showcase a bead-blasted finish, adding another layer of intricate detail.

Powering the wristwatch is De Bethune’s manually wound caliber DB2507LV, offering an impressive five-day power reserve. The movement incorporates features crucial for frequent globetrotters: hours, minutes, a second time zone (GMT), a jumping date, and a day/night indicator. The defining characteristic of this movement is its seamless integration with the Sympathique clock. When the wristwatch is placed into the clock’s cradle, it is automatically wound and periodically synchronized to the master time, thereby eliminating the need for manual adjustments after travel. This feature enhances convenience and ensures optimal accuracy.

De Bethune's renowned expertise in creating celestial dials is evident in the LVDB-03. The central dial features a mesmerizing starry sky, meticulously crafted with hand-set white gold pins and gold leaf against a blued titanium background. A subtle "LV" signature is cleverly integrated into the star map, visible only upon close inspection. Surrounding this celestial display, a rotating spherical day/night indicator transitions between rose gold for daylight and blued steel for nighttime, providing a visually captivating representation of time's passage.

The companion piece, the LVDB-03 Sympathique Louis Varius clock, is far more than a decorative item; it serves as a fully functional mechanical time reference for the wristwatch. This monumental clock movement comprises an astonishing 763 components and boasts an 11-day power reserve. It employs twin barrels and a constant-force remontoir mechanism to ensure consistent energy delivery and precise timekeeping. A significant advancement over historical Sympathique designs is the enhanced user experience: the wristwatch can be effortlessly docked into the clock’s cradle without requiring any prior preparation or disassembly, reflecting modern demands for ease of interaction. Once docked, the system automatically engages through the crown, winding and synchronizing the watch over several hours.

Aesthetically, the clock draws inspiration from classic marine chronometers, featuring an adjustable orientation and a weighty titanium base adorned with blued meteorite. Engraved rotating dioramas encircle the movement, depicting various travel scenes that underscore the project's core theme of exploration and movement. Both the watch and clock are housed within a custom titanium Louis Vuitton trunk, designed to protect these exquisite objects during transit and storage.

Production of this extraordinary horological system is highly limited, with only two complete sets—each comprising one clock and one watch—being created. Additionally, ten standalone wristwatches will be sold separately. The LVDB-03 Louis Varius wristwatch is priced at €375,000 (excluding taxes), while the complete set carries a retail price of €4,000,000 (excluding taxes).

The LVDB-03 Louis Varius project undeniably solidifies Louis Vuitton's ambition to be a serious contender in the world of high-end watchmaking. While personal preference may dictate whether one favors the LVDB-03 Louis Varius watch over De Bethune's GMT Starry Varius DB25VGR, the true brilliance of this offering lies in the innovative and harmonious combination of the wristwatch and its Sympathique clock, creating a truly exceptional and integrated timekeeping experience.
