Experts will share their findings on the origins and historical journeys of these magnificent pieces, alongside detailed analyses of vintage cutting and setting methods. Distinguished Voices in Jewelry Scholarship

A notable lineup of speakers has confirmed their participation, including Linda Borsch and Matthew Cumbie, conservators from The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Maurício Vincente Ferreira Júnior, director of the Imperial Museum in Rio de Janeiro, and Ellen van Bork and Suzanne van Leeuwen, a metals conservator and a jewelry curator/conservator from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, respectively, will also contribute their expertise. The opening ceremony will be graced by the presence of Portugal's Infanta Maria Francisca, Duchess of Coimbra, underscoring the event's royal significance.

A Bicentennial Tribute and Colonial Legacy

A special segment of the colloquium will commemorate the 200th anniversary of the passing of Portugal's King Dom João VI of the Braganza Dynasty. This presentation will highlight the royal crown crafted in Brazil for his ascension to the throne. This particular piece serves as a powerful symbol, prompting discussions on the broader implications of colonial-era gem procurement and the intricate transatlantic royal patronage that shaped the research and valuation of historical jewelry from South America.

Attendees will be granted exclusive entry to the Portuguese royal collections, which will be temporarily closed to the general public during the event. A major highlight is the Royal Treasure Museum itself, housing an astounding thousand jewels from the former Portuguese Crown. These priceless artifacts are secured within one of the world's most impressive museum safes, a sprawling 775-square-meter, gold-lined vault spanning three floors and protected by two massive five-ton doors, a true marvel of security and preservation.

The inaugural 2024 colloquium, which focused on royal gems and jewelry more generally, experienced an overwhelming demand for attendance, according to Nuno Vale, the museum's executive director. Early registration for the 2026 event has already concluded, indicating similar high interest.
