A. Lange & Söhne Unveils New 1815 Up/Down Limited Editions with Compact 37.5mm Cases

September 04
A. Lange & Söhne is celebrating its heritage with the release of two new limited-edition timepieces: the 1815 Up/Down in compact 37.5mm cases. These exquisite watches draw inspiration from the brand's storied past, particularly Ferdinand Adolph Lange's birth year and the innovative pocket watch designs of the 19th century.

Elegance and Innovation: The New 1815 Up/Down Collection

Honoring a Legacy: The 1815 Collection's Historical Roots

The 1815 series from A. Lange & Söhne pays homage to Ferdinand Adolph Lange, the brand's founder. This collection is renowned for its classic aesthetic, drawing design cues from Lange's historical pocket watches. The 1815 Up/Down, with its distinctive power reserve indicator, is a testament to this legacy, rooted in an 1879 patent for a mechanism indicating a watch's winding status.

Innovative Engineering: The Patented Power Reserve System

Early power reserve indicators were often intricate and cumbersome. However, Richard and Emil Lange's patented system introduced a compact differential gear, allowing for slender pocket watch profiles. This ingenious concept is reinterpreted in Lange's modern calibre L051.2, which integrates a space-saving planetary gear system directly into the movement, resulting in an exceptionally slim 8.7mm case height.

Refined Design: The Compact 37.5mm Case

The latest iterations of the 1815 Up/Down feature a more understated 37.5mm case, a departure from the larger 39mm model introduced in 2013. Available in either pink or white gold, these cases exemplify German watchmaking's understated elegance. They boast horizontally brushed flanks, a gleaming concave bezel, and sharply curved lugs. The crown is finely fluted, ensuring a secure grip.

Distinctive Dials: Blue Aesthetics with Signature Features

These new models are distinguished by their striking blue dials, which maintain the iconic recessed center characteristic of the 1815 Up/Down (known as AUF/AB in German). The power reserve indicator, prominently featured at 8 o'clock, showcases a snailed silver sub-dial with a black segmented track. A red double-segmented zone clearly marks the 'DOWN' position, complemented by a blued-steel hand.

Harmonious Symmetry: Balancing Design Elements

The power reserve display is elegantly balanced by a small seconds sub-dial at 4 o'clock, also featuring a snailed pattern and a longer blued-steel hand. In keeping with the 1815's historical inspiration, the crisp white peripheral railway-style minute track includes small dots for hours and triple dots for quarter-hours. White pad-printed Arabic numerals and lancet-shaped hands, matching the case material, further enhance the dial's readability and classic appeal.

Exquisite Movement: The Hand-Finished L051.2 Calibre

Through the sapphire crystal caseback, the manual-winding L051.2 calibre is a marvel of horological craftsmanship, echoing historical pocket watch movements. It features a German silver three-quarter plate, intricately decorated winding wheels with solarization, and seven gold chatons secured by blued screws. Adorned with Glashütte ribbing and a hand-engraved balance cock, this movement, assembled twice by hand, vibrates at 21,600vph and offers a substantial 72-hour power reserve.

Exclusivity and Availability: Limited Editions for Discerning Collectors

Each of these new 1815 Up/Down models is limited to 300 individually numbered pieces. These exclusive timepieces will be formally introduced at the Concours of Elegance held at Hampton Court Palace. Pricing details are available upon inquiry, reflecting their bespoke nature and limited availabilit
