Lab-Grown Diamonds Lead Engagement Ring Market Dominance

February 25

The landscape of the engagement ring market has undergone a profound transformation, with lab-grown diamonds now claiming a dominant position. A comprehensive study analyzing wedding trends in 2025 indicates that these ethically produced gemstones are overwhelmingly favored by modern couples, signifying a notable shift in consumer values and purchasing behaviors.

Insights from The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study, a leading annual survey of newly married couples in the United States, illuminate this significant change. The research reveals that a striking 61% of engagement rings purchased in 2025 featured lab-grown center stones. This figure represents an astonishing 239% increase compared to 2020, underscoring the rapid growth and acceptance of lab-created diamonds within the bridal jewelry sector. The study, which gathered data from over 10,000 couples married last year, highlights a clear preference driven by a combination of financial pragmatism and evolving ethical considerations.

This shift has had several cascading effects on the market. Couples are now opting for larger diamond sizes, with the average carat weight reaching 1.9 carats, while simultaneously experiencing lower average costs, settling around $4,600. This trend redefines traditional notions of luxury, emphasizing value and sustainability. Furthermore, approximately 40% of couples explicitly stated that the lab-grown origin of their diamond was an important factor in their decision-making process. In stark contrast, natural diamond engagement rings showed no substantial growth in either total sales or average center stone size during the same period.

Beyond the type of stone, the study also captured shifts in design preferences. Colorless diamonds remained the most popular choice for center stones, while sapphires and moissanite emerged as leading non-diamond alternatives, accounting for 23% and 20% respectively. The classic round diamond shape held its ground as a top choice (26%), closely followed by the elegant oval cut (25%). Although white metal settings continue to be prevalent, their dominance is waning. Yellow gold settings, for instance, saw a remarkable 140% increase in popularity over the last five years, now selected by 39% of couples.

The ritual of proposing is also evolving, with roughly 40% of proposals occurring between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day. The ring research and purchasing journey have become a more collaborative effort; 79% of ring recipients are actively involved in the selection process, and a quarter of couples shop together at retailers before the actual proposal. The importance of the physical retail experience remains strong, with over half of respondents valuing in-person shopping. Proposers typically visit two retailers and view around 10 rings before making a decision, with 64% ultimately purchasing their rings in a physical store, while one-third opted for online purchases.

The current ascendancy of lab-grown diamonds in the engagement ring market reflects a significant evolution in consumer priorities. Modern couples are demonstrating a clear preference for options that offer greater value and align with contemporary ethical viewpoints, leading to a dynamic and changing jewelry industry.
