IWC Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar ProSet: A New Era for Perpetual Calendars

April 18

IWC has once again pushed the boundaries of horological innovation with the launch of its new Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar ProSet series. These timepieces, featuring the groundbreaking 82665 caliber, tackle a long-standing challenge in perpetual calendar watches: the ability to adjust the date both forwards and backwards using a single crown. This development represents a significant leap in user convenience, making these complex mechanisms more practical for everyday wear. The collection, introduced in 2026, also showcases a refined aesthetic with a more compact 42mm case size and a variety of material choices, including stainless steel, white ceramic, and 18k 5N gold, each maintaining the brand's iconic design language.

The journey towards this innovation was highlighted at the 2024 GPHG awards, where IWC's Portugieser Eternal Calendar received the prestigious "Aiguille D'or" Grand Prix, demonstrating the brand's enduring commitment to calendar complications. While the Eternal Calendar boasted a 400-year gear, the new ProSet models address a more immediate user concern. Previously, misadjusting a perpetual calendar often necessitated a lengthy and costly service, sometimes requiring the watch to be sent overseas for correction. The complexity of traditional perpetual calendar movements, with their intricate mechanisms, made bidirectional adjustment a formidable engineering hurdle.

The brilliance of the 82665 caliber lies in its ingenious design, allowing the wearer to simply pull out the crown and turn it in either direction to adjust the day, date, and month. This seemingly simple function is powered by a complex internal interface, where a program wheel with varying elevations dictates the correct advancement or retraction of the calendar displays. For example, if it's February 28th and you turn the crown forward, the watch intelligently jumps to March 1st. Crucially, if you then turn the crown backward, it accurately reverts to February 28th, a capability previously unavailable in most perpetual calendars. This innovation eliminates the need for inconvenient corrector buttons, simplifying both the movement's construction and the watch case itself.

Beyond its revolutionary movement, the ProSet collection retains the distinctive visual characteristics of IWC's pilot watches. The dials feature a striking sunburst finish in green or blue, with clear sans-serif fonts and high-contrast elements. The minute and hour markers, familiar to fans of the Big Pilot's series, are plated appliques, with printed numerals on the white ceramic variant. All models are equipped with generous applications of Super-LumiNova for excellent legibility in low light. Despite integrating four subdials, a four-digit year display, and a hemisphere indicator, the dial maintains a surprisingly uncluttered appearance, with minimal intrusion on the numerals. A convex sapphire crystal, treated with IWC's signature anti-reflective coating, protects the dial, offering superb clarity.

The new ProSet models are offered in a range of materials, each contributing to a distinct aesthetic. The blue dial "Le Petit Prince" versions are available in robust stainless steel, paired with a comfortable 5-link steel bracelet, or in sophisticated white ceramic, complemented by a matching rubber pilot-style strap. Both options feature the convenient toolless EasX-CHANGE® System. The prominence of the oversized onion crown, a hallmark of pilot's watches, is particularly striking on the white ceramic model. While IWC has excelled in crafting cases and bracelets from experimental materials, matching the crown's material to the case remains a challenge, even in their most advanced creations.

The most visually captivating variant is the green and gold reference IW329602, crafted from 18k 5N gold, including the crown. This version exudes an air of refined luxury, particularly when paired with its stitched olive green buffalo leather strap. The combination of gold and green creates a harmonious and elegant statement. Coinciding with the twentieth anniversary of IWC's "Le Petit Prince" collaboration, the ProSet models continue the tradition of featuring the signature blue dial. While the "Le Petit Prince" watches often feature a rotor depicting the titular character visible through the sapphire caseback, IWC has generally maintained a subtle approach to incorporating specific imagery from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's classic, opting for a more minimalist interpretation over the years.

The introduction of the IWC Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar ProSet signifies a pivotal moment in the evolution of perpetual calendars. By offering a practical and intuitive bidirectional adjustment mechanism via the crown, IWC has transformed a traditionally delicate and complex complication into a more user-friendly and robust timepiece. This innovation not only enhances the utility of perpetual calendars but also demonstrates that even within established brands, there is still ample room for groundbreaking advancements in watchmaking. The ProSet models prove that innovation is thriving, bridging the gap between intricate horology and everyday wearability, making the future of complex watch mechanisms seem closer and more accessible than ever before.
