Gem Legacy's Strategic Board Expansion Enhances Global Impact
In a significant move to elevate its global initiatives, Gem Legacy, headquartered in Ferndale, MI, proudly announced the integration of three highly respected leaders into its Board of Directors. This expansion is poised to amplify the organization's efforts in supporting artisanal gem mining communities, particularly in East African nations like Tanzania and Kenya. The newly appointed board members—Annie E. Doresca, Sara Yood, Esq., and Mark Smelzer—each contribute unique and critical expertise that aligns perfectly with Gem Legacy's strategic objectives for growth and enhanced outreach.
Annie E. Doresca, renowned for her extensive experience in non-profit finance and operational leadership, assumes her role on the board while simultaneously serving as President & CEO of the Diamond Council of America and COO & CFO of Jewelers of America. Her profound understanding of financial governance and her commitment to fostering equity and inclusion, evidenced by her role as Founding President of the Black in Jewelry Coalition, are invaluable assets. Doresca articulated her enthusiasm, stating, “Joining the Gem Legacy board allows me to channel my dedication to education and workforce development directly to the communities at the foundation of our industry. I am honored to support initiatives that cultivate genuine opportunities and foster independence within East African mining regions.”
Sara Yood, Esq., brings an exceptional depth of knowledge in responsible sourcing and supply chain compliance. As President, CEO, and General Counsel of the Jewelers Vigilance Committee, an organization lauded for upholding industry ethics since 1917, Yood's expertise in anti-money laundering, FTC compliance, and international trade regulations is unmatched. Her active participation in bodies such as the United States Kimberley Process Authority and the Ethics Commission of CIBJO underscores her dedication to ethical practices. Yood expressed her excitement about the role, noting, “Having witnessed Gem Legacy’s impactful work firsthand during recent visits to artisanal mine sites in Tanzania, I am incredibly eager to contribute to an organization that deeply connects the jewelry industry with its source countries.”
Mark Smelzer, recognized for his expansive network and communicative prowess within the jewelry sector, joins the board after a distinguished career that includes nearly two decades as publisher of JCK magazine and JCKonline. Currently serving as Vice President of Business Development at Jewelers Mutual Group, Smelzer’s ability to articulate the organization's vision and forge significant industry partnerships will be instrumental in broadening Gem Legacy's engagement with jewelers and retailers whose businesses are inextricably linked to the prosperity of the mining communities. Smelzer shared his honor, stating, “I deeply admire the contributions Roger, Ginger, and Rachel Dery have made to East African artisanal gem-mining communities, and I look forward to collaborating with my fellow board members.”
Monica Stephenson, Board President of Gem Legacy and Founder of ANZA Gems, lauded the new appointments, emphasizing that their collective expertise in finance, compliance, and communications will significantly strengthen the organization’s foundation during a crucial period of expansion. The leadership team is confident that these additions will enable Gem Legacy to achieve greater effectiveness and visibility, ultimately benefiting the mining communities it serves.
The strategic integration of these three highly experienced individuals into Gem Legacy’s board represents a pivotal moment for the organization. Their combined expertise is set to not only enhance operational efficiency and governance but also to significantly amplify the message of ethical sourcing and community empowerment across the global jewelry industry. This move underscores a strong commitment to sustainable development and fair practices, promising a brighter future for artisanal miners and the broader gemstone supply chain.
