CIBJO Celebrates Centenary with Water Conservation Project in India

March 24

The World Jewellery Confederation, CIBJO, is commemorating its centennial year with a significant philanthropic endeavor: the inauguration of CIBJO Lake in Luvariya, Gujarat, India. This fresh-water reservoir, officially opened on World Water Day, March 22, 2026, symbolizes a powerful commitment to sustainable development and community well-being. The project, undertaken in collaboration with the Dholakia Foundation, addresses critical water scarcity issues in India's drought-prone Saurashtra region, directly impacting thousands of farmers and transforming agricultural practices.

The Dholakia Foundation, the charitable arm of Hari Krishna Group, a leading global diamond manufacturer, spearheaded the development of CIBJO Lake. This ambitious undertaking is an integral part of their broader Gagadiya river rejuvenation initiative. The lake spans an impressive 15 acres and boasts a storage capacity of 156 million liters, providing vital water resources to five local villages. This project is expected to benefit approximately 12,000 farmers by facilitating multiple crop cycles annually and significantly raising groundwater levels, thereby bolstering water security in the region.

The inauguration ceremony saw CIBJO President Gaetano Cavalieri join Dr. Savjibhai Dholakia, founder of Hari Krishna Exports, whose life's work has been dedicated to uplifting vulnerable communities in India. Distinguished attendees included Shri Kaushikbhai Kantibhai Vekariya, Minister of State for the Government of Gujarat; Shri Bharatbhai Sutariya, Member of the Indian Parliament; and several members of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, along with diplomatic representatives and industry leaders. Their presence highlighted the collaborative spirit and wide-ranging support for this impactful project.

Dr. Cavalieri, in his address, drew a parallel to Martin Luther King Jr.'s iconic words, stating, "What was once barren land has been transformed into a thriving ecosystem of water, greenery, wildlife, and community life." He emphasized that associating CIBJO with such a transformative development project is a profoundly fitting tribute to its centennial, showcasing the jewelry industry's capacity to profoundly improve lives and societies.

Dr. Dholakia echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of environmental stewardship and fostering long-term initiatives for future generations. He highlighted how the lake development and water conservation efforts, achieved through close collaboration with villagers and the Dholakia Foundation, have empowered farmers. What was once a single annual crop cycle has now expanded to three, demonstrating the tangible benefits of enhanced water access.

India faces severe water challenges, particularly in rural agricultural areas. With approximately 600 million people experiencing extreme water stress and the escalating impact of climate change, reliable water access is paramount for agricultural productivity and food security. The CIBJO Lake project serves as a beacon of hope and a practical solution to these pressing issues.

The accomplishments of the Dholakia Foundation in creating CIBJO Lake are truly extraordinary. This initiative stands as a testament to how industries can operate with a strong social conscience, proving that business expansion and corporate responsibility are not mutually exclusive but can indeed go hand-in-hand. This project serves as an inspiring example of how the jewelry industry can contribute meaningfully to global well-being, enhancing the lives of individuals and strengthening communities through impactful, sustainable endeavors.
