Breguet Unveils Expérimentale 1: A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation with Magnetic Escapement

December 02

Breguet has unveiled its latest horological masterpiece, the Expérimentale 1, marking a significant stride in watchmaking innovation. This limited-edition timepiece, limited to just 75 pieces, introduces a groundbreaking constant-force escapement rooted in magnetic resistance, combined with a high-frequency tourbillon. Operating at an impressive 10 Hz (72,000 vibrations per hour), this movement more than doubles the industry standard, offering unparalleled shock resistance and chronometric accuracy. The watch's design and technological advancements underscore Breguet's dedication to pushing the boundaries of traditional watchmaking while honoring its rich legacy.

The designation 'Expérimentale' might imply a prototype, but this watch is far from it. Each timepiece is certified by the stringent Breguet hallmark, guaranteeing an exceptional accuracy of +/- 1 second over a 24-hour period. Instead, the name serves as a tribute to the brand's historical spirit of innovation, recalling Abraham-Louis Breguet's numerous pioneering inventions, all of which underwent rigorous experimental phases. These historical innovations include the tourbillon, the perpétuelle watch, the natural escapement, and the constant-force escapement. The Expérimentale 1 harmoniously integrates two pivotal elements from Breguet's past patents: one related to constant force in 1798 and the other for the tourbillon, registered in 1801.

At the heart of this timepiece lies the new Caliber 7250 movement, a marvel of engineering. It features two titanium escape-wheels, each equipped with a magnetic track. A pallet lever, uniquely designed with magnetic rather than jeweled pallets, is positioned between these wheels. The precision regulation of the movement is achieved through the repulsive forces between the magnetic tracks on the escape wheels and the magnets within the pallets, ensuring a consistent impulse to the balance throughout its power reserve and eliminating friction in the escapement. The movement boasts double barrels with four mainsprings, providing a robust 72-hour power reserve. Its components, including a nickel-phosphate lever and a silicon balance spring, are housed within blued 18-karat gold bridges, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship.

The watch's aesthetic leans towards a classic regulator display, featuring minutes on the central dial and hours on a subdial at six o'clock. The seconds are gracefully indicated on the one-minute tourbillon, a layout reminiscent of the Breguet ref. 1747—the brand’s inaugural regulator-style wristwatch, introduced in 1997 to commemorate Breguet's 250th birth anniversary. This fusion of traditional display with avant-garde mechanics highlights Breguet's overarching goal for this collection: to forge a link between its storied past and a progressive future. By respecting its archives and past achievements while embracing new technologies, Breguet aims to captivate a new generation of watch enthusiasts, a challenge faced by many heritage brands today.

Encased in an 18-karat pink gold, the timepiece echoes the distinctive design of the Marine collection, characterized by its closely set central lugs, fluted caseband, and a durable rubber strap. Measuring 43.5 mm in diameter and 13.30 mm in thickness, the Expérimentale 1, like all Marine models, features indications on the dial, including chapter rings and hands, generously treated with Super-LumiNova for optimal legibility. This limited-edition watch is individually numbered and priced at CHF 320,000.
