BND Dive Watch: Unveiling the Mk. 3 Evolution

March 11

The BND dive watch lineage welcomes its third generation, the Mk. 3, building upon the foundational success of its predecessors. This latest iteration showcases a commitment to iterative refinement, introducing critical enhancements that bolster its performance and wearability. From a more robust water resistance to an upgraded movement and a new strap material, the Mk. 3 represents a measured evolution in the brand's pursuit of a reliable and distinctive dive timepiece.

The journey of BND watches began in 2021 with designer Vincent Bonnaud, who drew inspiration from vintage dive watches of the mid-20th century. His initial offering, the Mk. 1, was a 39.5mm timepiece featuring 100 meters of water resistance, powered by a Seiko NH35A automatic movement, and notably, an acrylic crystal, a nod to its historical influences. This debut model, available in black, blue, and brown dial variations, was produced in limited batches of 150 pieces each. The watch quickly garnered attention, earning commendations from significant figures in the horological and diving communities, including former Rolex ambassador and COMEX diver Thèo Mavrostomos, who recognized its credibility for professional use, and industry veteran Jean-Claude Biver, who expressed enthusiasm for BND's direction.

Responding to feedback and a desire for improvement, Bonnaud unveiled the Mk. 2 in 2022. This version brought forth substantial upgrades, including a durable sapphire crystal, a slimmer case profile, and a screw-down crown that effectively doubled its water resistance to 200 meters. Like its predecessor, the Mk. 2 was offered in three dial colors and limited to 150 units per color, with all models initially paired with NATO straps. This consistent, incremental approach highlights Bonnaud's philosophy of perfecting an existing design rather than continuously launching new collections.

The BND Mk. 3 continues this tradition of thoughtful enhancement. A significant upgrade lies in its increased water resistance, now reaching an impressive 300 meters, achieved through a meticulously redesigned crown mechanism for a tighter seal. The movement has also seen an improvement, with the inclusion of the Seiko NH38A, which, by omitting the date function, offers a cleaner dial aesthetic. Furthermore, this movement is regulated to maintain accuracy within -5/+10 seconds per day, a notable achievement for a watch in its price category. A welcome change for many wearers is the transition from a NATO strap to a more comfortable and practical FKM rubber strap, enhancing the watch's overall wearing experience.

The BND Mk. 3 maintains its elegant and uncluttered vintage aesthetic, a hallmark of the brand. The dial is free of superfluous text, avoiding mentions of "Automatic," water resistance ratings, or reference numbers, contributing to a clean and functional appearance. The 120-click unidirectional bezel, with its luminous markers, underscores its utility as a reliable diving instrument. Available in gray, white, and a distinctive khaki green (MNKHA), each colorway is produced in a limited run of 100 pieces. These references carry the "MN" initials, referencing the French Marine Nationale, reflecting Vincent Bonnaud's appreciation for vintage dive watches with ties to the French Navy. The retail price for the Mk. 3 is €598.95 (including 21% VAT), a modest increase over previous versions that reflects the considerable improvements. Shipping is slated for June 2026. While the Mk. 3 offers compelling enhancements, existing owners of the Mk. 1 or Mk. 2 might find the upgrade less essential unless they are dedicated collectors or particularly drawn to the new color options or the rubber strap. Nevertheless, BND continues to carve out a niche for itself by offering well-crafted, thoughtfully improved dive watches that resonate with both enthusiasts and professionals.
