A remarkable collaboration has emerged from the worlds of French watchmaking, Chinese artisanal traditions, and Swiss horological expertise. Massena LAB, led by veteran Swiss watch authority William Massena, has joined forces with Atelier Wen, founded by French entrepreneurs Robin Tallendier and Wilfried Buiron, who are dedicated to showcasing Chinese watchmaking on a global scale. Their inaugural joint project is the 'Atelier Wen x Massena LAB Inflection Shùo,' a stunning 40mm tantalum timepiece. This exclusive collection offers two dial variations: 10 pieces with solid 18-karat white gold dials, and 40 pieces featuring a sophisticated blend of 18-karat white and rose gold.

The creation of this timepiece was a journey that began in 2023, culminating in a unique fusion of East and West. William Massena’s visit to Atelier Wen's operations in China solidified the vision for the collaboration, emphasizing the integration of a Swiss movement and a meticulously handcrafted gold dial, encased in a tantalum body and bracelet. Tantalum, renowned for its challenging properties—it is exceptionally heavy and difficult to work with—has become a coveted material in high-end watchmaking due to its distinctive pewter-like hue and superior anti-corrosive qualities. The watch's design further elevates this challenge with an all-curved case and bracelet, drawing inspiration from Chinese architectural forms, featuring concave bezels and polished chamfers that highlight the material's complex interplay of brushed and mirror-polished surfaces.

The centerpiece of the 'Inflection Shùo' is undoubtedly its dial, crafted from solid 18-karat gold. Each dial is exquisitely finished using the tremblage technique by Swiss engraving specialist Coralie Mercier, creating a shimmering, finely grained surface. The numerals embody a harmonious East-meets-West aesthetic, with a unique 'California dial' concept featuring Chinese characters on one half and Western Arabic numerals on the other, all filled with blue to complement the blued-steel hands. Powering this intricate display is a customized Girard-Perregaux GP03300 automatic movement, offering a 48-hour power reserve and water resistance up to 100 meters. The movement's bridges are inspired by ancient Chinese wind motifs, with ruthenium plating, anglage, and laser-etched côtes, while the 5N rose gold rotor also echoes the wind theme, showcasing meticulous attention to detail. This limited release of only 50 pieces, with specific allocations for top clients and general release, underscores its exclusivity and desirability among collectors.
