Angolan Diamond Leadership Strengthens Trade Ties with Antwerp Diamond Sector
Forging a Brighter Future: Angolan Diamonds Embrace Global Transparency
Angolan Delegation's Strategic Visit to Antwerp
This week, a high-ranking Angolan delegation, spearheaded by Mineral Resources Minister Diamantino Azevedo, is engaging with the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC). The primary goal of this two-day visit is to deepen commercial ties between Angola, a significant producer of high-quality rough diamonds, and Antwerp, renowned as a reliable and transparent hub for diamond trading and a gateway to international luxury markets.
Ambition for Enhanced Diamond Trade
The clear objective of this meeting is to boost the volume of Angolan rough diamonds traded through Antwerp, creating mutual benefits for both nations. Accompanying Minister Azevedo are Dr. José Ganga Junior, Chairman of Endiama (Angola's state diamond mining company), and Eugénio Bravo da Rosa, Chairman of SODIAM, which oversees the sale of all Angolan rough diamonds.
Direct Engagements for Concrete Outcomes
Karen Rentmeesters, CEO of AWDC, emphasized that this visit transcends mere diplomatic formality, serving as a direct conduit to connect supply and demand. The AWDC has organized bespoke one-on-one sessions between Endiama and SODIAM and key players within Antwerp's diamond sector. These sessions include rough diamond traders, cutters, tender companies, and representatives from leading luxury jewelry brands.
Angola's Growing Prominence in the Diamond Market
In 2024, Angola's rough diamond production exceeded USD 1.4 billion, positioning it as the world's second-largest diamond producer by value. Historically, the Angolan diamond industry faced challenges regarding transparency, leading to a substantial portion of its trade occurring in less regulated markets, such as Dubai.
A New Era of Transparency and Credibility
Under the leadership of President João Lourenço, the current Angolan government is actively working to shed this past image. Recent years have seen a decisive pivot towards transparency, regulatory compliance, and international credibility. This policy shift has made Antwerp, with its stringent regulations, comprehensive controls, and advanced traceability systems, an increasingly appealing sales channel. In 2024, 21% of Angola's rough diamond output was directly exported to Antwerp.
Mutual Benefits of Strengthened Partnership
Rentmeesters highlighted that channeling more Angolan diamonds through Antwerp generates significant added value, both economically and in terms of reputation. Antwerp plays a crucial role in branding Angolan diamonds as a responsibly sourced, premium product, on par with those from established producers like Botswana, Lesotho, or Canada. This strengthened trade relationship offers a clear win-win scenario. Antwerp gains improved and quicker access to high-quality Angolan rough diamonds, which can be locally sorted and efficiently sold through auctions or direct client relationships with SODIAM. For Angola, Antwerp provides a dependable link to the world's premier luxury and jewelry houses, where factors like origin, transparency, and compliance are increasingly decisive purchasing criteria.
