American Gem Society Unveils Advanced Certified Gemologist Appraiser Credential

April 08

The American Gem Society (AGS) has introduced a new advanced certification, the Advanced Certified Gemologist Appraiser (ACGA) program, available to all its members. This initiative represents a significant step forward in the industry, enhancing the standards for gemological knowledge, appraisal practices, and ethical conduct. The ACGA credential is a testament to AGS's ongoing commitment to safeguarding consumers and upholding integrity in the jewelry appraisal sector.

The ACGA credential is meticulously structured to encompass a sophisticated blend of specialized gemological understanding, proficiency in appraisal processes and valuation, and adherence to stringent professional standards. To qualify for this esteemed credential, applicants must meet several rigorous requirements. These include maintaining the existing CGA credential with an AGS Business for a minimum of three years, demonstrating substantial experience in performing appraisals within the jewelry industry, and successfully completing the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) 15-hour Personal Property course, along with its mandatory refresher sessions.

Furthermore, candidates are required to operate and maintain an Accredited Gem Lab (AGL), which involves successfully passing an annual maintenance audit. Adherence to AGS's comprehensive ethical and professional guidelines is also paramount. The final step in achieving the ACGA credential is the successful completion of the annual American Gem Society recertification examination, ensuring that credential holders continuously update their knowledge and skills.

Wade Abel, the Director of Education and Gemology at the American Gem Society, emphasized that the ACGA is the culmination of extensive feedback and evolution based on insights from their members regarding advanced appraisal credentialing. He stated that this new program positions AGS appraisers at the forefront of the industry, equipping them with one of the most current and advanced credentials available. To ensure the smooth adoption and promotion of the ACGA, AGS is providing a comprehensive promotional kit to its credential holders. This kit includes practical communication tools such as website content, key talking points, social media materials, an official ACGA credential certificate, and a distinctive logo pin.

Members who hold current credentials and are interested in pursuing the ACGA are encouraged to reach out to the education department for support and guidance. This new program solidifies AGS's role as a leader in elevating the standards of professionalism and expertise within the jewelry appraisal community, ultimately benefiting both professionals and consumers alike.
